Khine was nice, punctual and knowledgeable. He was discreet enough when necessary. After one day with us visiting Yangon, we decided to hire him for a second day . Having him around saved us a lot of hassles to negotiate for the taxis, to find a place to eat and it really made our days easier.” – Yann, Singapore

Karaweik Palace in Yangon

Yangon is the the largest city of Myanmar. Formerly called Rangoon, it has a population of  5.2 million people. Furthermore it was the capital of Myanmar until 2006. The military government relocated the capital to a purpose built city called Naypyidaw in the interior of the country.

The British captured Yangton in 1824-26 during the First Anglo-Burmese War. Nevertheless after winning, the British returned the administration to the Burmese. However a fire destroyed the city in 1841. In 1852, the British seized the city again in the Second Anglo-Burmese war. The British also seized the lower part of Burma, to produce British Burma. At this time, Yangon became an important trading hub. The British also set up Rangoon University and Rangoon Hospital.
