Naga
Naga is the youngest of 7 siblings, born in rural Cambodia. Siem Reap province. With the death
of his father in 2001, he had to take over his father’s duties growing rice. This at a young after attending school. To advance his education, and in particular to learn English which was his passion, he had to ride 20 kms per day by bicycle for 3 years. His first real job was to look after mental children in the morning and then in the afternoon he was a volunteer teaching English in an NGO school.Working with many foreigners, he was delighted to practice out his English on them.
His dedication to improve resulted in passing the exam to be a teacher of English in public school.
Furthermore in 2012, he completed his tour guide training. An official qualification awarded by the Ministry of Tourism in Siem Reap. Since then he has worked in collaboration with travel agents and hotels offering his tour guide services. Book Naga as your tour guide in Siem Reap. Highlights of Siem Reap
Siem Reap is the gateway to the famous Angkor Wat
Whilst the capital of Cambodia is Phnom Penh, it is Siem Reap that is the more popular. This is due to the famous Angkor Wat temple, some 6.5 kms from Siem Reap. This complex of ornate temples were the seat of the Khmer Kingdom from the 9th to 15th century. During medieval times it was the largest city in the world. Since then the jungle has encroached the surrounding wooden houses, leaving behind only the majestic stone temples. Check out the huge south gate at Angkor Thom. So great is its importance, the Angkor Wat temple is included in the Cambodian national flag. Well preserved they are obviously a must see when visiting the area.
Note that Angkor Wat is the largest religious building in the world today. It is only a small part of the Angkor Archeological site.
Another stunning temple complex is Ta Prohm off National Road 6. Look out for the intricate carving. All this amidst the invading jungle with its huge tree roots and vines. This area was made famous through the film “Tomb Raider” starring Angelina Jolie.
Other structures include Banteay Srei dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva, and Preah Khan. The latter is described as a work in progress. You see the invasion of the trees whilst the temples are being restored.
Pol Pot was a revolutionary nationalist who became Prime Minister from 1976 to 1979. In charge of the Khmer Rouge with Marxist-Leninist views, atrocities occurred in Cambodia depicted vividly in the film “Killing Fields”. To get an understanding of this bleak period in Cambodian history, visit the War Museum Cambodia. With a veteran as your guide, the exhibits are secondary to the guide’s testimony of what happened during this period.
The Cambodia Landmine Museum has an interesting tale. Founded by an ex-soldier Aki Ra, he made it his mission to free landmines wherever possible. But he did more than that. Those who were orphaned or maimed, he brought them back home where he and his wife catered for them. Not only giving them food and shelter, but also aimed to find them work and useful employment in the future. These otherwise abandoned children had found hope in the arms of Aki Ra. The museum is about his incredible touching story.
