Highlights of Sao Tome
Sao Tome and Principe are islands off Gabon, West Africa, with Portuguese heritage. Founded in the 15th century, it is one of the oldest African colonies. Sao Tome is the largest of the islands. Actually Sao Tome is Portuguese for “Saint Thomas”.
Formed from a string of outcrop of volcanic rock, and lying close to the equator, the island has some interesting biodiversity. Tourists are lured there by the beaches, its rainforest, the volcano mountain and coral formations. Within such natural habitat, much of the island is in national parks to preserve the unique ecosystems.
The top tourist attraction is the Pico Cao Grande. At 668 metres high, it is even higher than the Empire State Building. You simply cannot miss it. Shaped like a skyscraper, it is located in the Obo National Park. From Sao Joao to Porto Alegre, you can take mighty good pictures of it from the road. Surrounded by rainforest it is difficult to approach though. Its name means Big Dog Peak. Supposedly viewed from above it looks as though a dog is staring at you.
Enjoy more nature with the Cascata de Sao Nicolau, the St. Nicholas Waterfalls. There is a bridge for you from which you can take photos and some well constructed stairs which make an excellent walkway close to the water. Deep in the rain forest access is by a bumpy road. You will need a 4×4 to get there.
Another water attraction is the Lagoa Azul, the blue lagoon. A beautiful pace to relax by its turquoise waters. You get local things to eat such as roasted banana and roasted fish. There is a small lighthouse on a hill nearby and several souvenir shops. You can go snorkeling too.
A more extensive beach is Praia dos Tamarindos. Popular with locals and tourists alike, it is in the north of Sao Tome Island. Waters are warm, the sea is crystal clear but the access road is yet again somewhat bumpy.
As you would expect. museums are not de rigueur on a small tropical paradise island. Nevertheless there is Museu Nacional De Sao Tome & Principe. Situated in the old fort, it captures the bygone days of slavery. The Portuguese captured locals on the island and traded them as slaves. The museum also explains the history of how the locals fought for independence from their colonial masters. A small but interesting museum that depicts the history of the island. It is also the home of the first ever national Sao Tome flag.
Visit Claudio Corallo. Dedicated to the manufacture of chocolate, you can review the whole process from cocoa bean pods to the finished chocolate product. An organic enterprise, you even get to do some chocolate tasting. There is a small entrance fee for the tour, but this is refunded if you purchase some chocolate at the end. The tour runs three times a week in the afternoon and best to reserve your place. Often hyped as some of the best chocolate in the world. Claudio’s passion is wonderful to see. Certainly a unique present from Sao Tome.</h4?
Another good shopping opportunity are the local products on sale at Ursotigre na Praia Lagarto.
Best of course to go with a Solo Tour Guide, your local friendly tour guide. His knowledge will make your trip extra special.
