Highlights of Medan

Medan North Sumatra, Indonesia

Medan North Sumatra, Indonesia

Medan is the capital of North Sumatra. Sumatra being one of the 17,000 islands that make up Indonesia. Neighbouring Java is the most populous island with Jakarta its largest city and capital of Indonesia. Bali is another island of Indonesia, famous as a tourist destination especially for Australians. Medan itself is the fifth most populous city in Indonesia with over 2.2 million inhabitants.

The Dutch referred to Medan as “the land of money”. In the 18th century, collaboration between the reigning sultan at the time, and the Dutch pioneer Jacob Nienhuys, enabled the area to grow cash rich tobacco crops. Chinese merchants were also important to its growth.

Nowadays Medan is known as the “City of Million Shophouses”. The title pays tribute to the importance of trade with many living upstairs whilst opening a shop downstairs.

The number one tourist attraction of Medan is actually the Airport Railink Services. Noted for being punctual, clean, reasonably priced and efficient, this transport service links the airport to the city centre of Medan. A stress free experience with helpful staff.

One oddity is the Marian Shrine of Annai Velangkanni. A Catholic church , it actually resembles an Indian temple. It welcomes people of all religions. A small shop inside sells rosaries, and other church items. Certainly a place for you to pray and take in the beauty of its environment.

Step into Tjong A Fie’s Mansion and you are stepping into the past. For the house belonged to a Chinese tycoon who helped develop Medan. Photos, information boards and the resident tour guide will all help you to get an understanding of Tjon A Fie’s life and generosity. He helped in the development of schools and places of worship irrespective of religion. A true historical philanthropist.

iVisa.com One of the other attractions in Medan is the Medan Grand Mosque, Masjid Raya Al Mashun. Not surprisingly really as Indonesia has the largest population of muslims in the world. There are elements of different styles of architecture including Spanish, Indian and Middle Eastern. A peaceful place for prayer. However there are many Hokienese that live in Medan, who believe in Buddha. For this section of people, there is the Buddhist temple, Maha Vihara Maitreya Cemara Asri. What it lacks in decoration it makes up for in size. It comprises of a convention hall, temple and a vegetarian restaurant. Another place of worship that you may enjoy is Shri Mariamman Temple, a famous temple in the centre of Medan.

For a touch of royalty, go and visit a small palace called Maimun Palace. Constructed in 1888, look out for a plaque in Dutch and Arabic written on marble. A royal local institution for ceremonies you can see a yellow throne decorated with European crystals. Part of the heritage of Medan.

For the shopaholics, you will head to Centre Point Mall. It has a food court in the basement. Choose your time to go accordingly as it is quiet in the morning, but gets busy in the evening.

If you are looking for a day trip to escape the traffic jams of Medan, then head to Brastagi Highland for some fresh air. Famous for its fruit & vegetable market. Cooler than Medan, you have to traverse a windy road to get there. There is a strawberry farm and dairy farm too that you can visit. It is a popular weekend and holiday retreat.

What is noticeable about Medan is its tolerance and interest in the different cultures that make up the city. This can be seen in its past history as well as the present. But go with a local guy to show you around, a Solo Tour Guide, your private friendly tour guide. He will be able to show you places off the beaten track as well as the major sights listed.
