Highlights of Joao Pessoa
Joao Pessoa is the capital of the state of Paraiba in Brazil. Located in the far most eastern point in the Americas. Hence it goes by the name “the city where the sun rises first”. Moreover it is famous for its pleasant climate, sandy beaches and its colourful baroque style architecture. The population is approximately 750,000.
The first discoverers left their mark by the construction of religious buildings. Firstly you have the Cathedral Basilic of Our Lady of the Snows built in 1585. But others followed suit over time. Another is San Antonio convent and San Francisco church. These are now named as the San Francisco Cultural Center built in 1589. However only finished in 1788.
Parahyba do Norte as it was known then, was visited by Emperor Don Pedro II. Consequently the city received the title of “Imperial Provisional City”. A privilege only granted to those visited by the Emperor.
Other religious convents, monasteries and churches were built in the 17th and 18th century. Thereby consolidating Joao Pessoa as a religious entity in the region.
Apart from the religious and cultural respective, the city has much to offer the visitor with its cuisine.
Influenced by the indigenous Africans and Portuguese, coastal dishes use the local supply of fish such as lobsters, shrimps and crabs. In contrast sertaneja cuisine has the traditional Brazilian rice and black beans accompanying a protein source such as chicken or beef.
City of Crafts
UNESCO designated Joao Pessoa as a city of crafts in 2017. Not surprisingly it is a popular tourist destination even with other Brazilians.
Additionally one project to attract much attention was the Sirens of Penha project where female artisans make jewellery and other crafts. Their unique style uses fish scales on copper threads.
