Highlights of Cusco
Cusco, located in south eastern Peru, is the ideal hub for visiting Machu Picchu. The remnants of a 15th century Inca civilisation which miraculously died out. And probably the most famous photographed site of Peru.
However this city is no stranger to history. It was once the capital of the Inca Empire. As such there are archaeological remains to view. For example some Inca ruin walls.
Moreover since the invasion of the Spanish, they have left their influence not only in language but also architecture. There are many building of Spanish colonial architecture to admire. Take for example the main square, la Plaza de Armas. You can see buildings with carved wooden balconies and arcades. The Spanish left their imprint on religion too. Interestingly if you visit the baroque Santo Domingo Convent, you can see the remains of Inca stonework. In fact the convent was built on top of a former Inca site, the Temple of the Sun.
For museums, try the Museo Maximo Laura. A museum of contemporary textile art, it will surprise you.
In addition there are many opportunities to explore the natural landscape. For this, you may wish to consider visiting Humantay Lake, trekking around Ausangate or Cerro Colorado Vinicunca. Or even Montana de Siete Colores which means 7 colours mountain. This mountain comprises of lines of different coloured stones running down its side. Hence its other name, Rainbow Mountain. It is impressive.
Nevertheless if you do decide to visit Machu Picchu, try stopping at the archaeological park of Sacsayhuaman. It contains some amazing stone structures. Alpacas are all around too.
Moreover if you want more adventure, you can also go on ATV tours, rafting or biking. Otherwise why not try some ziplining.
