Highlights of Bucharest

Bucharest

Bucharest is located in the southern part of Romania. In addition to being its capital, Bucharest is the centre of commercial life in the country. It has a population of 1.8 million which accounts for just under 10% of Romania’s total population of 19.5 million.

The most impressive building in Bucharest is the Communist era Palatul Parlamentului government building. It was built as a palace for Nicolae Ceausescu. Unfortunately he was overthrown and executed before its completion. Nevertheless it is an impressive building and is the world’s second largest building.

For open spaces head to the popular Herastrau Park with its large lake. The park offers opportunities for cycling and water-cycling. Apart from admiring the nature around you with the mandarin ducks and swans, there is also an amusement zone and a sports zone. Back to the water again you can go fishing or try your hand at rowing a boat. For refreshments or a bite to eat try Hard Rock Café or the beer garden Beraria H. There is also a village museum, and in summer the outdoor theatre offers movies and theatrical performances. It’s the place to be.

When it comes to museums, try the Muzeul National al Satului “Dimitrie Gusti”. This outdoor museum has over 300 buildings showing the history of Romanian village architecture. Craftsman sell their wares in a traditional setting. For more architecture head to Stavropoleos Monastery. Built in 1724 it is one of Romania’s oldest churches. A small old church with wonderful wall paintings.

To review how the head of state of the former Soviet bloc lived, visit the Ceausescu Mansion. Luxury at its height, you can see opulent furnishings and interiors. More than just a building, the museum aims to portray how Ceausescu lived. His everyday routine, his hobbies and how he used the different rooms.

Bucharest old town itself has cobbled streets and has a mix of the old with contemporary art bars and restaurants. The place to go out for nightlife.

Other things to do include seeing the Water Light Show in Unirii Square, taking a stroll through Cismigiu Gardens and shopping at AFI Cotroceni, a big mall with entertainment. But for souvenirs and a Romanian market experience, head to Obor Market.

Of course the best way to discover Bucharest is to go with a Solo Tour Guide, your friendly tour guide. They will be able to offer you an insight like no other.
