Highlights of Bar

iVisa.com

Bar is one of the least tourist destinations on the Montenegrin coast. Therefore, it makes it perfect for the off the beaten track and no crowds exploring. You can explore the ruins of the old town.

Why not visit one of the oldest olive trees in the world or just relax on unspoilt and quiet beaches.

In addition to this, not forgetting if you are a thrill-seeker, then Bar is home to Montenegro’s most challenging canyoning experience.

The must see attraction is the old town which is 4km from the current town and coast. There have been many settlements in this location since before 800 BC and the old town has been built up over the centuries by the different empires.

The old town was almost destroyed in fighting between Montenegrins and Turks in 1878 and then the large earthquake of 1979 further ruined what was left.

Bar – The Old Town, The Stone Bridge and the Beaches

Now you can visit the site of the old town which is being slowly reconstructed. Therefore, it is a fascinating place, half rebuilt and half ruined, all of which you can explore on foot. One of the most best  features of the old town is its huge impressive, stone arch bridge that crosses the valley. The bridge has 17 arches that are supported by 18 massive stone pillars.

The bridge is part of the aqueduct that was in the 16th century built by the Ottomans. It is the best preserved aqueduct in Montenegro. Actually, there are only three of these left in the former Yugoslav states. The others are in Croatia and Macedonia.

Just like all coastal towns of Montenegro, life revolves around the beach in summer and Bar is no exception to this. If you’re looking for a secluded spot to cool off, then the city beach is right in front of the town. Alternatively, the town beach is right next to the busy port, therefore there are lots of boats and even large ships passing close by.

Finally, the warmest month is July with average air temperature of 25°C. The coldest is January with 7.4°C. Interestingly autumn is warmer than spring by about 2°C.
